KYBELLA®
KYBELLA® is a non-surgical option for reducing fullness under the chin. Produced by Allergan Biopharmaceuticals, the same company that produces JUVEDERM® and BOTOX®, the KYBELLA® treatment is FDA-approved for reducing fat under the chin. If you are struggling with a double chin, this is a great option that can reduces the need for cosmetic surgery such as neck lifts and liposuction. What causes a double chin?
The most common cause of a double chin is excess weight gain. However, it is possible to have fullness under the chin even if you are not overweight. In fact, many patients find that they have a double chin even after losing weight. That’s because fullness under the chin can be a result of a genetic factor, or even just a part of aging. You might be familiar with the embarrassment that a double chin causes, especially if you find that you have to take pictures at certain angles to get them to look right.
How does it work?
The FDA-approved KYBELLA® injection contains deoxycholic acid as an active ingredient. This is an enzyme that is already naturally produced by your body. It occurs in the stomach, where it helps to break down fat and absorb it during the digestive process. Additionally, the enzyme is capable of targeting the fat cells in your chin area.
When KYBELLA® is injected into the targeted area, the fat cells are broken down by the enzyme. Your body will eliminate the fat cells, similar to how it clears away a bruise on your skin. The results of the KYBELLA® injection create a contoured, slimmed neck and a sculpted jawline.
How is the injection administered?
KYBELLA® should only be administered by a trained medical professional. The injection is so quick that it could be done during a lunch break.
Tiny needles are used for the injection. The needles are about the size of an eyelash. Approximately 20 tiny injections are administered over the course of a few minutes. For your comfort, topical numbing cream may be used.
Are there side effects?
In general, KYBELLA® requires no downtime. You might experience some minor discomfort for the first half hour following the injection. This minor discomfort typically consists of tingling and burning. It is not uncommon to experience slight swelling around the chin area for just a few days, and the area might be tender to the touch. Many patients notice that the swelling they experience is not noticeable to others. These side effects are expected to dissipate quickly after the injection is performed.
Ask your dedicated medical professional about the use of pain relievers after treatment. Many patients find that their side effects lessen with each subsequent treatment. An added bonus is that KYBELLA® only targets fat cells, so there is no concern of it affecting your muscles or nerves.

You will notice results after your first injection. To achieve full, dramatic results, you may need three to four injections. However, this can vary from one patient to the next. Since the amount of fat is decreased, many patients also report noticing tightened and lifted skin in the chin area. And since the fat cells in the chin are broken down, you are not likely to see weight gain in your chin area, even if you gain a few pounds. As a result, the changes you experience with KYBELLA® will last indefinitely.
It is important to note that the exact results you experience can depend on a few factors, including how much fat is under your chin before beginning treatment.
Currently, KYBELLA® is only approved for use in the chin area—also referred to as submental fullness. It has not yet been studied or approved for use in other areas of the body.
