What is PDO Threading?
PDO threading is skin lifting and tightening technique that uses threads made of polydioxanone (PDO) delivered with hypodermic needles. The threads are inserted into the deeper layers of skin. The threads naturally fully absorb after about six months following treatment. The PDO threads stimulate the production of collagen and the development of new blood vessels, which improves circulation and makes skin healthier. In fact, collagen reconstruction begins almost immediately by inflammatory response. The threads also cause fat tissues to shrink. Results may include:
- Improved skin texture and elasticity
- A “facial slimming” effect
- Cellular renewal
- Tighter, firmer skin

How is it Done?
PDO threading is a non-surgical procedure that delivers natural results. The area to be treated is numbed and a local anesthetic is injected to improve patient comfort. Blunt-tip needles (cannulas) are inserted into various layers of skin. Depending on what needs to be treated and the size of the treatment area, there may be multiple injection points. The threads serve as an “anchor” that lifts and tightens the skin. It is a lunchtime procedure that takes about 20 minutes to perform.
A V-shape is thought to be the sign of a beautiful and healthy face. As gravity sets in and aging takes place, the V-shape begins to disappear over time. With the PDO threading technique, a type of “scaffolding” is created in order to support the tissues and maintain the V-shape.
What Happens After Treatment?
The insertion of the threads produces results that are noticeable as soon as the procedure is completed. This is because the threads provide immediate support once they are inserted. The treated area usually begins to look more natural after about a week. After a few months, patients may notice added rejuvenative effects (e.g., smoother and firmer skin and improved skin texture). Results may continue for several months after the threads dissolve. PDO threading can be performed again before results fully wear off.

PDO threading is a treatment that can be effective for both men and women with sagging or loose facial skin. While it can be a standalone treatment, some patients see even better results when PDO threading is combined with other non-surgical facelift alternatives like Ultherapy. Possible side effects associated with the procedure are generally mild. An initial assessment is typically done when the treatment is performed at a medical spa to determine if the technique will likely address a patient’s specific skin issues.
